Abhyanga

Abhyanga

What is it? Abhyanga is a relaxing and healing Ayurvedic full body massage using warm oil. The oil used in Abhyanga massage is typically infused with medicinal herbs that assist in alleviating a variety of health conditions. The oil is massaged over the entire body before bathing.

Why would I want to do this therapy? Abhyanga massage combines the best of modern massage technique with natural, health-giving Ayurvedic herbs. Book an abhyanga session (or several) to enjoy full relaxation and stress reduction. In addition to its calming effect, the treatment is good for the skin, giving deep hydration and nourishment.

What are the benefits of doing this therapy? This massage treatment offers multiple health benefits:

Reduced vata – Vata is one of the vital life energies or doshas that constitute the mind and body, according to Ayurvedic tradition. This dosha is associated with movement and air.  Excess vata is often at the root of a racing mind, sleeplessness, flatulence and other sources of discomfort.

Improved sleep quality – The deep relaxation Abhyanga achieves balances your mind-body connection and releases tension and muscle pain, allowing better sleep.

Reduced joint inflammation – Schedule an Abhyanga massage if you have arthritis. Deep, warming massage using effective medicated oils reduces painful symptoms.

Fewer headaches – Headaches are often a side-effect of insomnia or sustained tension in the body. Enjoy a relaxing massage to reduce the pain and frequency of headaches.

Improved circulation – Poor circulation causes the extremities to feel cold and is bad for cardiovascular health. Abhyanga stimulates blood flow through full body massage.

Does it hurt? What can I expect? Because Abhyanga involves applying mild pressure to the muscles, you might experience mild to moderate pain where muscles are particularly tight. This will subside as the muscle loosens and you regain more mobility. You can also expect some mild pain post-session, as your muscles continue to heal through improved circulation.

Svedana

Svedana

How long is it? Each treatment lasts one hour.

What is it? Svedana is an Ayurvedic full body or localised steam treatment. Steaming has been practised for centuries in Ayurveda as a natural relaxation and detoxifying treatment. During svedana, a chamber is used to enclose the part of the body steamed. Typically, you will be given a wet cloth to keep your head cool.

Why would I want to do this therapy? Svedana provides natural detoxification and has numerous additional health benefits. Post-treatment, your skin will appear brighter and deeply cleansed. You’ll also experience improved circulation. In addition to these benefits, steaming aids metabolic function and can alleviate the symptoms of arthritis. Localised steams can be used to treat infertility.

What are the benefits of doing this therapy?

The benefits of a Svedana steam treatment include:

Greater balance between vata and kapha doshas In Ayurvedic tradition, the doshas are the vital life energies that are part of our mind-body constitution. The doshas are affected by external sources such as the food we eat and can be thrown out of balance. Excess of the watery kapha dosha can lead to water retention, and the sweating produced by svedana helps to reduce kapha to restore the balance between this watery dosha and the dry, airy vata dosha.

Intensified Detoxification Sweating is the body’s natural detoxifying process, as toxins are expelled through the skin’s pores when we work up a sweat. Svedana provides a more intense version of this that effectively flushes out toxins that would otherwise build up and potentially cause illness

Revitalised skin Your skin will feel more hydrated after your first svedana treatment and after each subsequent session. The deep penetration of the steam into the pores also helps to clear up blemishes and promotes more even skin tone.

Improved circulation Like Abhyanga Ayurvedic massage, svedana treatments improve circulation. Immersion in hot steam dilates blood vessels which allows the blood to circulate better.

Reduced muscle pain Svedana warms while promoting the flow of blood to stiff muscles, alleviating muscular pain.

Does it hurt? What can I expect?
Sweating is a natural function of the body and svedana thus does not hurt. A qualified Ayurvedic practitioner will make sure that the steam is hot enough to provide the full health benefits but not so hot that it will scald or injure you in any way. You can expect a revived and relaxed feeling post-treatment.

Kati Basti

Kati Basti

How long is it? One session of Kati Basti lasts one hour. The effect is cumulative so book multiple sessions to achieve the full benefits.

What is it?  Kati Basti is an Ayurvedic treatment specifically designed to assist in improving back-related health conditions and reducing pain. A mould is filled with approximately a litre of warm, natural Ayurvedic oil and placed on the lower back for the duration of the session before the area is bathed.

Why would I want to do this therapy? Kasti Basti is indicated if you are suffering any back pain or are recovering from a bout of sciatica or spinal trauma. It also promotes greater flexibility in the lower back.

What are the benefits of doing this therapy?

The benefits of a warm oil Kati Basti treatment include:

  • Relaxed deep tissue You might carry a lot of tension in your low back from sitting long hours or doing heavy lifting. Kati Basti provides deep tissue relaxation through heat as well as the addition of natural, relaxing Ayurvedic herbs to the warm oil
  • Reduced back pain You will feel the full benefits of the painkilling properties of the medicated warm oil used in Kati Basti after a few sessions. The warmth of the oil combined with its relaxing medicinal properties will alleviate muscular tension.
  • Improved flexibility in the lower spine If you have experienced a back injury or are prone to a backache, restoring flexibility gradually without risking further injury is crucial. Kati Basti provides a gentle solution for gradually loosening up the joints and ligaments in the lower back.
  • Reduced inflammation Joint inflammation causes considerable pain. You will experience reduced inflammation through the soothing effects of the warm oil used in this treatment.
  • Locally reduced vata In Ayurvedic medicine, the vata dosha or life energy associated with dryness and air is often a culprit in lower back pain. This warm oil treatment provides the means to reduce vata locally, targeting the problem area.

Does it hurt? What can I expect?

Kati Basti does not hurt. There should be no open injuries in the lower back area at the time of treatment. You can expect greater flexibility and reduced back pain after two to three sessions.

Grihva Basti

Grihva Basti

How long is it? Each session of Grihva Basti treatment lasts one hour.

What is it? Grihva Basti is a localised treatment for the neck and cervical area of the spine. Grihva Basti involves placing a mould filled with warm Ayurvedic oil on the cervical spine and leaving it in place for an hour until the full healing benefits have taken effect.

Why would I want to do this therapy? Grihva Basti is indicated if you have pain in the upper spinal cord or the cervical area of the neck. Conditions such as cervical spondylosis and degenerative conditions of the spine benefit from the application of warm, naturally medicinal oils. This Ayurvedic treatment will also help if you suffer from vertigo.

What are the benefits of doing this therapy?

The benefits of Grihva Basti include:

  • Relaxed deep tissue in the neck area The neck is one part of the spine that is particularly vulnerable to injury and muscular pain. Long hours sitting, sport injuries or accidents can cause substantial neck pain. The application of warm, medicated oil improves blood flow to the neck muscles, allowing faster muscular regeneration.
  • Reduced neck pain The relaxing effects of Grihva Basti on the neck area reduces pain while making this area of the body more flexible
  • Reduced localised vata The doshas (the primary life energies that make up our bodies and minds according to Ayurvedic tradition) can be thrown out of alignment. If one dosha is in excess, it can cause associated issue. Inflammation is closely associated with vata and pitta. Grihva Basti warm oil treatments introduce the cooling, hydrating properties of the watery kapha dosha, balancing vata
  • Reduced inflammation Part of what causes neck pain is inflammation in the discs that make up the spine. By improving circulation and relaxing deep tissue, Grihva Basti reduces inflammation.
  • Improved flexibility Neck pain can make it uncomfortable to even turn your head from side to side. Grihva Basti improves flexibility by relaxing muscles and reducing inflammation.

Does it hurt? What can I expect? Grihva Basti does not hurt. A professional Ayurvedic practitioner will warm the oil used to just the right temperature to provide the maximum benefit. As your neck muscles relax and become more mobile, you may experience some initial discomfort but this will dissipate as the treatment takes effect.

Janu Basti

Janu Basti

How long is it? Each Janu Basti treatment lasts one hour.

What is it? Janu Basti is an Ayurvedic warm oil treatment that is applied locally to the knees. A mould is filled with warm oil and placed on each knee and left in place for the duration of the treatment. As with other warm oil treatments, multiple sessions are usually preferable. This maximises the beneficial effects while also getting the most value out of the oil.

Why would I want to do this therapy? If you have knee pain or an inflammatory condition such as arthritis Janu Basti is indicated. It is also effective as a supplementary treatment for post- knee operation recovery.

What are the benefits of doing this therapy?

The benefits of Janu Basti warm oil treatment are:

  • Improved flexibility in the knees Tension in the knees due to wear and tear can be reduced effectively via Janu Basti treatments. The warm oil nourishes deeply and eases muscular tension.
  • Reduced pain The pain associated with tension, knee injuries or operations diminishes with each Janu Basti treatment. Natural herbal painkillers and muscle relaxants are infused with the oil for lasting improvements
  • Reduced vata The dry and airy vata dosha (one of the three primary energies that the mind and body contain) can grow to excess and create health problems. An excess of vata is associated with conditions such as arthritis that cause knee pain. Topical warm oil treatment will bring your doshas into better alignment.
  • Reduced inflammation Inflammation in the joints is one of the most common causes of knee pain. In Janu Basti treatment, the pooling of warm oil on the knees over an extended period of time allows the heat and medicinal properties of Ayurvedic oil to reduce inflammation.
  • Improved blood circulation Cramps and muscle pain around the knees is often associated with varicose veins and poor circulation. The warmth of the oil dilates the blood vessels around the knees, improving circulation and reducing pain.

Does it hurt? What can I expect?

As you regain more flexibility and your muscles and ligaments move more than they may have been you might experience some passing discomfort. This will give way to greater flexibility and comfort. Expect to keep still for the duration of the treatment, as the mould will need to rest over your knee for the full duration of your session.

Shirodhara

Shirodhara

How long is it? Each Shirodhara treatment lasts 1 hour.

What is it? Shirodhara is a warm or cold Ayurvedic oil treatment which entails pouring therapeutic oil over the forehead area slowly. Over the course of an hour’s treatment, a continual, fine flow of oil over the forehead is administered while you lie comfortably on your back.

Why would I want to do this therapy? Shirodhara is an effective Ayurvedic therapy for conditions and ailments relating to the head. The treatment promotes mental clarity and relaxation and alleviates headaches. The calming, sensuous flow of oil over the skin reduces nervousness and irritability. This treatment is excellent for combatting a dry scalp and can help to slow hair loss.

What are the benefits of doing this therapy?

The benefits of a Shirodhara oil treatment include:

  • Increased relaxation The stresses and pressures of daily life can result in tension headaches and irritability. Shirodhara reduces tension and promotes deep relaxation. The steady, calming sensation and the gentle warmth of the oil used focuses the mind.
  • Improved concentration and memory If you are struggling with short-term memory loss due to stress, or your concentration needs improving, Shirodhara will give you greater mental clarity and ease.
  • Reduced Hyperactivity Shirodhara is a suitable therapy for adults as well as children who are prone to hyperactivity. An over-active mind increases the production of stress hormones in the body. Try this treatment and experience its naturally calming effects
  • Increased balance Mental imbalance is often seen as purely chemical, yet this Ayurvedic therapy is known to help balance the mind and help equalise conflicting thoughts and feelings.
  • Reduced vata or pitta, according to your needs The essential life energies that make up the mind (in Ayurvedic tradition), the three doshas, can easily become imbalanced. Depending on the type of oil used, Shirodhara will reduce either vata or pitta in excess, fostering greater mental and emotional balance.

Does it hurt? What can I expect?

Shirodhara does not hurt but you can expect to have a very oily scalp and hair. This does nourish and condition the scalp, however. You will feel very relaxed during the therapy and may fall asleep. Post-treatment, keep your head warm and relax for the rest of the day if possible to maximise the benefits of the treatment.

Nasya

Nasya

How long is it? Each Nasya therapy sessions lasts 30 minutes.

What is it? Nasya is an Ayurvedic treatment in which cold or warm liquid is poured into each nostril. These may be medicated using natural herbal preparations for treating specific conditions, or pure ghee or oil may be used.

Why would I want to do this therapy?  The nose is the gateway to the head and lungs, and therapies that work via the nose can thus help with respiratory ailments as well as inflammation of the nasal passages (what western medicine calls sinusitis). You would choose a Nasya treatment if you wanted relief from allergies, nose, throat and ear conditions, and relief from insomnia.

What are the benefits of doing this therapy?

The benefits of Nasya include:

  • Reduced inflammation of the sinuses Sinusitis can be painful and can develop into secondary infections if left unattended. Nasya is a natural solution for reducing sinus inflammation and reducing irritation and discomfort in the nasal passage.
  • Improved concentration Nasya stimulates the mind and in doing so will improve your concentration. Congestion and a stuffy feeling can reduce mental focus, but this therapy replenishes it
  • Improved cognitive abilities With increased focus comes increased cognitive abilities. The stimulating effects of Nasya will leave your mind alert and ready to tackle new challenges requiring quick thinking and creativity.
  • Enhanced memory Because the nose is the door to the mind, Nasya will enhance your memory. The clarifying process will make it easier to retain information.
  • Reduced vata In Ayurvedic tradition, vata is one of the three primary life energies making up body and mind. The dosha is associated with movement, wind and air. In excess, it helps the mind to race and aggravates insomnia. Nasya reduces vata, helping you to find balance and improved sleep.

Does it hurt? What can I expect?

Nasya doesn’t hurt. The treatment is typically performed in the morning on an empty stomach, so you may feel some hunger pains. The taste of Ayurvedic oil may linger in your throat for a little while after a session. A gentle facial massage may accompany treatment as this maximises the physical benefits of the therapy.

Niruha Basti

Niruha Basti

How long is it? Each Niruha Basti treatment session lasts one hour.

What is it? Niruha Basti is a colonic cleansing treatment. A special herbal tea is introduced to the colon via anal insertion and expelled.

Why would I want to do this therapy? Colonic enemas are used in western medicine and Ayurvedic medicine alike to treat digestive disorders and other conditions affecting the digestive system, particularly the lower intestine and rectum. Colonic cleansing helps to alleviate constipation and disorders of the gut such as IBS. Niruha Basti will help if you suffer from frequent haemorrhoids. Ayurvedic colonic cleanses also alleviate insomnia.

What are the benefits of doing this therapy?

The benefits of Niruha Basti include:

  • Cleansed digestive tract and colon Bacteria can accumulate and create health problems if the bowels aren’t evacuated effectively. A healthy and properly conditioned digestive tract aids digestion through the flourishing of healthy gut flora, too.
  • Improved sleep Constipation and other digestive discomfort interfere with sleep. Niruha Basti promotes better sleep by reducing bloating and other sources of physical discomfort in the digestive tract.
  • Reduced vata In Ayurvedic tradition, physical health is explained by way of the three doshas, the primary life energies that make up mind and body. The vata dosha is associated with wind, air and movement. Excess vata can result in increased flatulence and bloat. Niruha Basti helps to reduce vata and restore normal gut function.
  • Improved conditions of the digestive tract Conditions such as Crohn’s disease, Irritable Bowel Syndrome and haemorrhoids produce much discomfort. Niruha Basti’s gentle cleansing action may greatly improve these conditions.
  • Properly eliminated toxins The digestive tract is responsible for excreting inessential components of the food we eat and toxins. A colonic cleanse makes sure that toxins are eliminated from the body properly.

Does it hurt? What can I expect?

You may experience a sensation of rectal fullness that may cause mild passing discomfort. Because of the nature of basti treatment, you are advised to:

  •         Wear loose clothes (not your best clothes) to your treatment session
  •         Have a spare set of clothes and panties to change into if necessary
  •         Not eat for at least 3 hours before the treatment

Post-treatment, you should also:

  •         Favour light foods for at least the rest of the day (soups, sautéed vegetables and herbal teas are best)
  •         Avoid heavy exercise and sexual activity
  •         Remain indoors and stay warm

Anuvasana Basti

Anuvasana Basti

How long is it?  Each Anuvasana Basti treatment session lasts one hour.

What is it?  Anusvasana Basti is a colonic treatment focused more on nourishing the digestive tract than cleansing specifically. A lubricating preparation such as a natural Ayurvedic oil is introduced to the colon and retained (typically for longer than herbal tea colonic cleanses).

Why would I want to do this therapy?  Anuvasana Basti is a nourishing cleanse which promotes long term health in the digestive tract. In addition to cleansing the colon and lower digestive tract, this therapy helps alleviate the symptom of a broad spectrum of digestive conditions.

What are the benefits of doing this therapy?

  • Cleansed digestive tract – Because toxins are excreted via the digestive tract, it is important that evacuations are complete. Anuvasana Basti helps to ensure that your digestive tract is lubricated and allows complete bowel movements.
  • Improved sleep – The discomfort associated with digestive disturbances can aggravate insomnia. A lubricating Basti treatment will help you sleep better by decreasing discomfort.
  • Improved digestive conditions – Digestive conditions such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Crohn’s disease and others cause considerable inflammation that is a source of discomfort.
  • Reduced vata – In Ayurvedic tradition, the mind and body are said to be made up of three primary life energies called ‘doshas’. The vata dosha is associated with movement and air. When in excess in the body, this dosha can cause excessive bloating and flatulence. Anuvasana Basti helps to placate vata, bringing the doshas into greater balance
  • Reduced dryness – One of the underlying causes of constipation is insufficient lubrication of the digestive tract. This can be caused by poor hydration, but besides drinking water, Anuvasana Basti can improve lubrication for easier bowel movements.

Does it hurt? What can I expect? – You may experience mild passing discomfort with the insertion of the oil or other herbal preparation, but this is passing. For Basti, you are advised to:

  •         Wear loose clothes (not your best clothes) to your treatment session
  •         Have a spare set of clothes and panties to change into if necessary
  •         Not eat for at least 3 hours before the treatment

Post-treatment, you should also:

  •         Favour light foods for at least the rest of the day (soups, sautéed vegetables and herbal teas are best)
  •         Avoid heavy exercise and sexual activity
  •         Remain indoors and stay warm
